In the Footsteps of Priests and Nobility
A Journey Into the Depths of the Upper City
Experience the daily lives of Jerusalem’s aristocracy and the priests of the Second Temple in an extraordinary guided tour of the Herodian Quarter—a luxurious neighborhood hidden beneath the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem. On this immersive journey through time, you’ll get a rare glimpse into the opulent homes of Jerusalem’s elite and uncover the underground city as it was 2,000 years ago.
What’s in the Tour?
During the tour, we’ll descend beneath the streets of the Jewish Quarter to discover the remnants of the homes of priests, leaders, and wealthy residents who lived in Jerusalem during the Second Temple period. You’ll marvel at the stunning frescoes adorning the living room walls, intricate mosaic floors, wine storage jars, and the utensils used to serve lavish meals on beautifully decorated stone tables.
Among the well-preserved rooms, you’ll also notice mikvehs (ritual baths) used by the residents for daily purification—offering a glimpse into the customs and traditions that were an integral part of their lives. In one room, you’ll even see an engraving of the Temple Menorah, believed to have been carved by a priest who saw it firsthand.
Modern Jewish Life Above, Ancient Jerusalem Below
The Herodian Quarter has been meticulously preserved for future generations. Above the archaeological site stands the Kotel Yeshiva, designed in a way that allowed the historical remains to be safeguarded without disrupting the modern Jewish Quarter. This clever integration keeps the connection between the past and present alive, inviting visitors to explore the incredible story of Jerusalem up close.
